Prepare before the slip road

Highways, motorways and expressways differ in their rules, permitted vehicles and learner-driver restrictions. Check whether you may legally use the road and whether your training vehicle is allowed. Read signs before the interchange so you know your direction and can choose the correct entrance. As you approach, scan for the speed and density of traffic on the main road.

Merge without forcing a gap

Use the acceleration or entry lane to approach a suitable speed for joining, subject to signs and conditions. Check mirrors and the relevant blind spot, assess a gap and signal as required. Traffic on the main road may have priority under local rules. Do not assume another driver must move over for you. If a safe gap is not available, follow the road layout and local instructions rather than forcing your way in.

Keep the journey predictable

Once on the highway, maintain a suitable lane, safe following distance and legal speed. Monitor mirrors but keep your primary attention far ahead. Avoid lingering beside a truck; its blind zones can be extensive. Overtake only where lawful, check carefully before changing lanes and return to the appropriate lane when safe. Do not use the hard shoulder or emergency lane as a shortcut.

Plan the exit early

Read distance signs and move into the appropriate lane with ample time. When leaving, use the exit lane and adjust speed according to its signs and curvature. If you pass your exit, proceed to the next legal opportunity. Reversing, stopping or making a sudden cross-lane turn on a high-speed road can cause severe collisions.
