Read the road ahead
Look for lane markings, signs, turning arrows, merging traffic and upcoming exits. Decide where you need to be well before a junction. Last-second lane changes create unnecessary pressure and can surprise drivers around you. If you miss a lane or exit, continue safely and find a legal alternative route; do not cut across markings or brake abruptly to rescue the plan.
Make a clear safety assessment
Check mirrors for vehicles approaching from behind and beside you. Check the blind spot on the side you intend to move towards. Assess the speed of traffic in the destination lane, not merely the physical size of the gap. A gap that looks large can disappear quickly when another vehicle is closing at a much higher speed. Yield as local rules require.
Communicate and move deliberately
Signal in good time where appropriate, but remember that signalling requests a movement; it does not grant priority. Maintain a predictable speed unless conditions require adjustment, and steer smoothly across the lane line. Avoid drifting gradually between lanes while you are still deciding. Once established in the new lane, cancel the indicator if it has not cancelled automatically and restore a safe following distance.
Common situations that require patience
Motorcycles may be hard to spot, and large trucks have substantial blind zones. A driver may appear to leave a gap but accelerate unexpectedly. Near a lane closure, follow posted merging rules rather than assuming one universal convention. In heavy traffic, a slower, clearly communicated movement is usually safer than trying to force a small opening.
