Before you arrive
Confirm what documents, learner permit, appropriate footwear or identification your instructor requires. Requirements vary by country. Wear shoes that let you feel and operate the pedals accurately; avoid footwear that slips or catches. If you use glasses or contact lenses for driving, bring them. Tell the instructor if you have never sat in the driver's seat before.
Your instructor should explain the controls
You will usually learn how to adjust the seat and mirrors, fasten the seat belt, identify the pedals, use the indicators and check the dashboard. In a manual car, the instructor may demonstrate finding the clutch's biting point. In an automatic, they may explain selecting drive and reverse and the importance of keeping your foot on the brake while selecting a gear.
First movements are deliberately simple
Depending on local rules, the vehicle and your readiness, you may practise in a quiet legal training area or on a suitable low-traffic road. Typical exercises include steering, moving off, stopping, controlling speed and observing around the car. Your instructor may intervene with instructions or dual controls where fitted. This is normal and part of the safety system.
How to make the lesson useful
Ask questions if a direction is unclear, and say when you feel overloaded. Pay attention to why the instructor asks you to check a mirror or slow down, not just what to do. At the end, request specific feedback: what went well, which mistake matters most, and what will be covered next. Avoid judging your progress against social-media videos of experienced drivers.
