Make a quick walk-around
Look for flat or damaged tyres, leaking fluids, loose body parts and anything behind or under the vehicle. Ensure windows, mirrors, lights and number plates are clean enough to function correctly. Confirm that doors, bonnet and boot are properly closed. Check tyres against the manufacturer's pressure guidance when cold, using a reliable gauge, and inspect tread and damage periodically.
Check the important equipment
Make sure the brakes feel normal and the parking brake operates correctly. Test indicators, brake lights, headlights, wipers, washers and horn in an appropriate way. Check oil, coolant and other fluids according to the owner's manual, with the engine off and only when it is safe to do so. Never open a hot pressurised cooling system. For electric vehicles, confirm available charge and charging needs.
Prepare the driving position
Adjust the seat, head restraint and mirrors, fasten your belt and ensure passengers are restrained correctly. Secure bags so they cannot roll into the pedal area. Choose footwear that gives you reliable pedal control. Keep the windscreen clear and make sure a mobile phone or navigation device does not block your view or invite interaction while moving.
Check the journey and legal requirements
Have any licence, insurance, permits or documents required where you will drive. Consider fuel or range, traffic, weather and rest stops. If you find a serious safety defect, do not simply 'drive carefully' to compensate; arrange inspection or repair before the trip as appropriate. Different cars may require additional manufacturer-specified checks.
